APCS Power Clearing and Settlement AG was founded in 2000 with the aim of acting as a central imbalance settlement responsible in the liberalised Austrian electricity market. The reason for its establishment was the imminent full opening of the market, which required new market structures and clearly defined responsibilities. APCS officially commenced operations in October 2001, coinciding with the entry into force of the full liberalisation of the electricity market in Austria.
The opening of the market gave end customers the opportunity to choose their electricity provider for the first time. This made reliable, transparent and centrally organised settlement of energy flows essential. Since then, APCS has been an indispensable part of Austrian market settlement and makes a significant contribution to stability, transparency and efficiency in the electricity market.
